DUFF.
Designated
Ugly
Fat
Friend
I don't know about you but until the book came out I was unaware this word meant this. Literally, I'd only heard it used when people said 'oh she's up the duff' as in pregnant so that's awkward isn't it. Alas, in America apparently this is what it means amd every friendship group has one. When I found out genuinely I thought I was my friends' duff of the group, but I think everyone views themself that way and that's the point of this fabulous story by Kody Keplinger:

I don't know about you but until the book came out I was unaware this word meant this. Literally, I'd only heard it used when people said 'oh she's up the duff' as in pregnant so that's awkward isn't it. Alas, in America apparently this is what it means amd every friendship group has one. When I found out genuinely I thought I was my friends' duff of the group, but I think everyone views themself that way and that's the point of this fabulous story by Kody Keplinger:
Seventeen-year-old Bianca Piper is cynical and loyal, and she doesn’t think she’s the prettiest of her friends by a long shot. She’s also way too smart to fall for the charms of man-slut and slimy school hottie Wesley Rush. In fact, Bianca hates him. And when he nicknames her “the Duff,” she throws her Coke in his face.
But things aren’t so great at home right now, and Bianca is desperate for a distraction. She ends up kissing Wesley. Worse, she likes it. Eager for escape, Bianca throws herself into a closeted enemies-with-benefits relationship with him.
Until it all goes horribly awry. It turns out Wesley isn’t such a bad listener, and his life is pretty screwed up, too. Suddenly Bianca realizes with absolute horror that she’s falling for the guy she thought she hated more than anyone
Our protagonist is Bianca, she does make me laugh. I adore how blunt and honest she is but not negatively which I found unusual. She doesn't try and sugar coat anything or look at her life through rosy spectacles, nope it's just living life in straight up reality. Personally, I think she does it because she presumes if she does it she's less likely to get hurt; don't get it, hmm well look at it this way, if you just live in the reality and not trying to see anything more in the people that surround you doesn't make you think or hope you can try to change them. Equally going round using the high school hottie for distraction isn't gonna get you no where except make you fall head over heels for him but if you think you're too smart for it you wouldn't worry. Would you??
Wesley. Wesley. Wesley. The hottie, the badboy and yes readers I fell for him just like I did with Jace and Will and Draco. The ones who have these ambiguous qualities just get to me okay! What really frustrated me was how he clearly did like Bianca but she couldn't see because of his actions and his rep around school, come on B live a little see more in him.
If you think this book isn't going to be a little risky because you've watched the film (which I haven't) but apparently she licks his face, woooahhh you're in for a shock. Wouldn't say friends or enemies with benefits, frenemies with benefits (massive downplay on the enemy thing though).
'Beckie, did you cry?' I hear you ask. Of course! I always am emotionally corrupted by these fictional lives I live. In all seriousness, what I think after reading this book is that don't call anyone a duff or any nasty name. We all judge too much when everyone thinks there not good enough secretly anyway. I do. All of us should be more considerate.
The Duff by Kody Keplinger. Read it or regret it. Gets a big Beckie thumbs up.
