Film Review: Maleficent
Tuesday, July 01, 2014When I was little I grew up watching Disney films; especially the princesses! If you were like me, then you always hated the evil character, from the wicked witch to the evil step mum. Back then you only hated them because, to state the obvious, you thought they were mean, scary and nasty; as you grow older you just can't understand why they hate the kingdom, the princess or her family. Now Disney's putting a modern take on things by finally explaining why Maleficent cursed Sleeping Beauty in the first place.
For those who are confused or simply have never watched Sleeping Beauty (what was your childhood) the film Maleficent is simply the classic tale of Sleeping Beauty but told from Maleficent's perceptive. So, rather than watching Aurora grow up with the fairies we witness Maleficent's beginning and what made her become so bitter. By the end of the film you understand why she became so angry and what led to her actions in the film. It gives us some insight into Maleficent's childhood in the moors and how she wasn't deliberately targeting Aurora through hatred but because she believed humans to be cruel and untrustworthy; she was misunderstood.
I have to say Angelina Jolie's portrayl of Maleficent was phenomenal! She also looks unbelievably scary, as well as practically identical to the original animation, take a look ----->
The film itself is great anyway, in 3D it is mind blowing. Everything is so much more intense and (obviously) in your face. Watching in 3D brings the phenomenal graphics to life, even more so than in the standard 2D version. Elle Fanning plays Aurora with a certain grace and elegance about her, she's so beautiful to watch.
Looking back, now I have no hatred toward the character of Maleficent as I did as a youngster because now I have understanding of what led her toward her actions. She simply became lost on an unwinding road after being betrayed. This film is well worth watching, frankly I hope Disney continue to create modern spins on their old classics!
