Book Review: Fangirl by Rainbow Rowell

Friday, June 19, 2015

I've just finished reading Fangirl by Rainbow Rowell who was the New York times best selling author when it came to her previous novel Eleanor and Park.
This book I picked up because of the title, nowadays being a fangirl or fangirling over something like a show or a character or even an actor is not unusual. This word has (I imagine) made it into the dictionary by now. My sister majorly fangirls over Dougie from Mcfly just like I majorly fangirl over Stefan in TVD. What intrigued me was that I'd never heard of or found a book based on fanfiction writing.
Quick summary first? Cath and Wren are twins who've basically done everything together until college when Wren decides to have a change, Cath is left to fend for herself in college but rather than party like Wren she likes to bury herself in her fanfiction. However, things change and Cath has to grow up and open up to new experience outside of her own little world, the question is will she?
I had (well have) two fave characters one being Cath. To me reading fangirl I though it was kind of like Cath's coming of age story- she'd always lived in a comfort zone of it being her and Wren but never chosen to breakaway and ultimately experience life I suppose. Sometimes the way Cath speaks with an underlying tone of sarcasm (at the beginning) tells you she has the potential to be so much more but she just needs a push- to have faith in herself. The push is given when she starts to actually open herself up and accept her feelings and the changes in the situations around her; sharing a room with Regan, writing with Nick and Levi...oh Levi.
Levi was hand down my other fave character! Possibly the nicest male fictional character ever, so so cute. Rowell's description is of him is so easy to imagine, you can picture his smile that's repeated throughout just like him running his hand through his hair. I don't know about anyone else but personally I could definitely tell he'd had a soft spot for Cath long before she realised (lets be honest it wasn't hard).
Even though it's a light hearted book overall I think Rainbow Rowell has done such a great job of getting a lot of typical situations in there to make it more realistic. Addressing problems just reminding us all that life isn't easy, not at all perfect and can break even the strongest of people.
One thing I do admit though is that even though I did enjoy the 'Simon Snow' fanfiction parts I ended up skipping a few because I was so wrapped up in Cath's world I didn't need to change to Simon's.
So, if you're reading this wondering hmm should I give this book a read, then yes you should! I know I'll be reading another Rainbow Rowell book as soon as I can, as an added point she always has the most wonderful book covers which catch your eye. Loved Fangirl, I'll always be recommending it now to someone who asks.
